Reading...Give it A Shot! is named as one of five beneficiaries of the Canwest Raise a Reader Program! The premise behind the Canwest Raise-a-Reader is simple: if children know how to read, it helps ensure their success as adults. The higher someone's literacy level, the more likely that person is to be employed and have a higher income. Read more at:

www.raise-a-reader.com.

Thank you to all the Canwest Raise a Reader sponsors.

The Reading... Give it a Shot! program is a literacy program dedicated to encouraging grade four, five and six students to read for recreation as well as education. Members of the community are working together with the schools to inspire the joy of reading.
How the Program Works:

  • Reading...Give it a Shot runs annually from January to March.
  • Participating students record reading minutes - this can include books, newspapers, magazines, comic books, you name it!
  • All minutes are recorded on a tracking sheet, which is signed off by a parent or a teacher.
  • For every 100 reading minutes, students are rewarded with 1 of 24 bookmarks commemorating the 2010\2011 season.
  • Launch date for 2011 will be in January 10, 2011. Selection to attend this be based on 100% school participation for their grades 4,5,6. Schools will be selected via random draw based on their 100% participation .
  • Program finishes March 14, 2011.
  • Wrap up - 15 students will be selected based on their teachers recommendation as "The most improved student". These 15 students along with a chaperone will be invited to attend a ceremony at Calgary Flames home game. Apply on line now to ensure your school's participation in the program.
  • This year we are having a competition for our advertising campaign. Ballots are placed in the Calgary Herald for students to fill out and win an opportunity to have their picture taken with the Calgary Flames for this years Program Poster. Contest closes TBD. you must be a student in either Grade 4,5 or 6 and be a student in one of our Partner School Districts to be eligible.
